Second Degree Burns
Second degree burns affect the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Current approaches for the management of burns, such as skin grafting, can often result in scarring and contracture which can impair tissue functionality. Cytal Burn Matrix devices are designed for deep secondary degree burn management and have been shown to facilitate the body’s ability to remodel site appropriate, biomechanically functional tissue where scarring would be expected. The devices can facilitate ingrowth of vascularized tissue to support skin graft take18-19. The product can also be used to manage wounds to full closure without the need for autologous skin grafting.
Cytal® Wound Matrix Devices
ACell’s wound management products are medical devices that maintain and support a healing environment by facilitating remodeling of site-appropriate, functional tissue1.
Comprised of naturally-occurring urinary bladder matrix (UBM), these products maintain an intact epithelial basement membrane. Cytal devices are appropriate for acute wounds and chronic wounds.

Traumatic Wounds
MicroMatrix and Cytal Wound Matrix are available in various configurations to offer surgeons more options when managing traumatic injuries. The products are easy to use, and are highly conformable in irregular and large wounds.
Traumatic injuries often have significant soft tissue loss. Cytal Wound Matrix and MicroMatrix have successfully been used for traumatic wounds that are unable to obtain flap or graft coverage26. The products have also been used to facilitate the remodeling of site-appropriate, functional tissue1 and manage wounds to full closure without the use of autologous skin grafts
Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) occur when certain types of bacteria, viruses, or fungus get into a patient’s tissues, typically via a break in the skin. Once these microorganisms get into the tissues they reproduce, releasing a toxin into the body that destroys the surrounding tissue and muscle. NSTIs are associated with high mortality rates and require prompt treatment, which typically includes aggressive surgical removal of the diseased tissue.
Many survivors experience dramatic tissue loss and/or amputations that may require major reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. MicroMatrix and Cytal Wound Matrix can facilitate the remodeling of functional tissue1 and relieve some of the complexities of typical reconstruction procedures after major soft tissue loss
Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are common, but when they fail to heal and become chronic, they impair the quality of life of the patient, and can lead to severe complications. ACell’s UBM technology has been shown to modulate the immune response in wounds of diabetic patients. MicroMatrix and Cytal Wound Matrix may assist in diabetic wound healing by restoring an inflammatory state similar to that of non-diabetic patients27. ACell devices have also been shown to be a cost-effective alternative for the treatment of DFUs compared to other ECM
Gentrix® Surgical Matrix Devices
Gentrix Surgical Matrix products are medical devices engineered using ACell’s proprietary MatriStem UBM™ (Urinary Bladder Matrix) technology and are intended to reinforce soft tissue where weakness exists.
The Gentrix extracellular matrix scaffold has been shown to facilitate the body’s ability to remodel site-appropriate functional tissue1 where scarring would be expected. Gentrix Surgical devices are appropriate for a range of surgical procedures including various types of hernia repair.

Ventral Hernias
Gentrix Surgical Matrix devices can be utilized in a variety of complex hernia repairs.
-
In pre-clinical models of ventral hernia repair, the devices have been shown to fully remodel into tissue that offers the optimal strength needed for repair20, 1
-
Because the product fully resorbs, it can minimize the risk of costly complications such as foreign body response, erosion, and infection that can occur with synthetic alternatives3-7
-
In addition, a recent retrospective study demonstrated patient outcomes in complicated hernia rates with only 4% recurrence rate at 24 months (based on Kaplan-Meier Freedom from Recurrence analysis) and 15.6% at 36 months
Hiatal Hernias
Several Gentrix Surgical Matrix products can be used for hiatal hernia repair. The devices remodel into the host tissue, minimizing the risk of erosion or complication. It maintain the integrity of the hiatal hernia repair by facilitating the formation of biomechanically functional tissue.
-
Comes in a pre-cut “U-Shaped” design
-
Is designed to be easily handled and secured in laparoscopic surgery
-
Minimizes attachments from surrounding viscera
